Current Position at CWA

Principal Consultant. Food and Dry Commodities Group. Wide knowledge of the food industry. Extensive international experience of a broad range of food commodities including: grains, oilseeds, sugar, dates, seeds, vegetable oils, dried fish and other durable food and agricultural products. Specialist in insects, fumigation and mycotoxins.

Professional Experience

Thirty six years of international food security practice with direct experience of harvesting, handling, storage, pest control, quality and marketing management systems for grains and a wide range of other agricultural food commodities. Insect biology and evaluation of fumigations. Survey, inspection and appraisal of damaged food commodities and ships’ cargoes. Expert reports and expert witness. Port and shipping operations. Quality assurance management of food aid commodities. Design of agricultural quality standards and grading systems. Recently commissioned by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations to review a policy document on mycotoxins.

March 2000.  Food Aid Management Trainer to World Food Programme.  Conducted training of trainers in food commodity management with staff of local NGOs.  Supported selected trainers delivering a national workshop on Food Aid Commodity Management for staff of the World Food Programme and MINARS, the counterpart ministry.  Advised on fumigation procedure and salvage of damaged commodities.

July – August 2003.  Grain Quality Specialist for commercial company to provide expert opinion on the quality of a disputed consignment of containerised bagged maize.

Egypt
September 2003.  Food Quality Adviser for World Food Programme to provide expert opinion on disputed consignment of dried dates

El Salvador
Grain Quality Adviser for World Food Programme to provide expert opinion on containerised consignment of rice with suspected Khapra beetle infestation.

Ethiopia
December 2003 to July 2004.  Project Manager of Common Find for Commodities grain warehouse inventory credit programme.  Created national awareness of warehouse receipt systems, organised training and sensitisation initiatives, facilitated drafting of legislation, developing manuals and documentation.

May 2000.  Grain Quality Adviser to World Bank funded study to establish feasibility of warehouse receipt financing in western Kenya.  Appraised maize marketing systems with particular emphasis to existing quality and storage standards, competence of warehouse staff in handling, storing, grading and quality control.  Recommendations made to improve maize quality assurance systems.

March 2001.  Food Aid Management Trainer to World Food Programme.  Conducted food aid commodity warehouse management training workshop for staff of Danish Refugee Council, Norwegian Directorate for Civil Defence and Emergency Planning, Norwegian Refugee Council, Swiss Disaster Relief, and Swedish Rescue Services Agency.
