Presentation at The Sulphur Institute as part of the Sulphur World Symposium

Geoff Mason of the CWA International Metal & Minerals Group prepared a paper titled “Dynamics of Metals industry on Sulphur Demand” for presentation at The Sulphur Institute at the Sulphur World Symposium in Amsterdam. The abstract of the paper is quoted below, and full copies of the text are available on request.

The non-ferrous metals industries have always been indirect contributors to the sulphur industry as producers of sulphuric acid. 10-15 years ago increasing environmental concerns led to higher collection rates of sulphur dioxide at metal producers’ smelters which undoubtedly contributed to the weak market conditions for acid at the time. Now that most smelters capture at least 95% of the sulphur in the feed, increases in acid production from smelters are largely due to overall metal production increases. In fact, with more metal being produced from acid consuming oxide ores than previously, is the net contribution to the acid industry actually declining? This is discussed, but with the new nickel laterite projects’ voracious demand for acid being satisfied by on-site sulphur burning acid plants, the impact may in fact be felt more strongly on the sulphur markets.

European Food Safety Legislation

Recent changes in European food safety legislation has led to renewed interest in detecting salmonella in raw materials to be used for manufacturing animal feed. CWA experts have dealt with several such cases in the past 6 months where shipments of animal feed ingredients have been detained at European ports because salmonella bacteria have been detected in them.

The initial problem has been to verify the presence of the bacteria and to quantify the level. Following this CWA have helped to obtain the release of the shipment by ensuring that it is properly processed to kill the bacteria.

This expertise can be equally valid for human foods and food ingredients.  Further details on the CWA International Food Department can be found here.

CWA Food Department Involved in Sudan I Illegal Food Dye Investigation

UK consumer confidence in the food and drinks industry has recently been jolted by scares surrounding the presence in food of dyes like Sudan I, Para Red, Rhodamine B, Orange II, which are banned by law from use in products intended for human consumption.

CWA International's Food Department has been instructed by a major stakeholder in the food industry to perform an in-depth technical and scientific investigation into the contamination with illegal food dyes of foodstuffs produced in the UK.

CWA have established a team of expert scientists and food technologists to investigate and advise on the circumstances of the contamination and to assess the risk of damage to human health associated with the consumption of foodstuffs contaminated with dyes banned from use in food.

CWA Food Department investigates self heating of palm nut shell cargoes

Palm Nut shell, once a forgotten by-product of the palm oil trade, is now being carried in bulk to be used in Europe as an alternative source of fuel.  Under certain circumstances the cargo is prone to self-heating but is not, as yet, listed in the IMDG Code.  In the latter part of 2004, CWA was commissioned by a major European commodity trader to attend and investigate a shipment which exhibited hot cargo problems at load port and to conduct further research to explain the phenomenon and to advise on procedures for safe carriage at sea.

More information about the food department is available, here.

Food Poisoning Incidents onboard Passenger Ships Resulting in Personal Injury Claims

Since the mid 1980s, food poisoning outbreaks have gradually increased as a result of changes in lifestyle. Throughout the world people are eating more fresh convenience foods and there has been rapid growth in mass catering and overseas holidays.

In particular the increased popularity of cruise holidays has recently resulted in a spate of personal injury insurance claims resulting from food poisoning outbreaks onboard ships.

Within our CWA Food Department we have considerable food safety and food hygiene experience and have carried out a number of investigations into the causes of food poisoning.

Our Associate Director, Graham Tow is a senior food scientist and an expert in Codex HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) which is an internationally recognised food safety technique and the backbone of Food Safety Legislation. Not only is it an effective tool for assessing and controlling potential food safety hazards but it can also be used effectively in conjunction with microbiological analysis to identify the source of an outbreak in post-mortem investigations and the analysis of claims.

If we can be of assistance or you require further information, please contact either Frazer Imrie or Graham Tow at our London office.  Our contact details are available here.
