Food Poisoning Incidents onboard Passenger Ships Resulting in Personal Injury Claims

Since the mid 1980s, food poisoning outbreaks have gradually increased as a result of changes in lifestyle. Throughout the world people are eating more fresh convenience foods and there has been rapid growth in mass catering and overseas holidays.

In particular the increased popularity of cruise holidays has recently resulted in a spate of personal injury insurance claims resulting from food poisoning outbreaks onboard ships.

Within our CWA Food Department we have considerable food safety and food hygiene experience and have carried out a number of investigations into the causes of food poisoning.

Our Associate Director, Graham Tow is a senior food scientist and an expert in Codex HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) which is an internationally recognised food safety technique and the backbone of Food Safety Legislation. Not only is it an effective tool for assessing and controlling potential food safety hazards but it can also be used effectively in conjunction with microbiological analysis to identify the source of an outbreak in post-mortem investigations and the analysis of claims.

If we can be of assistance or you require further information, please contact either Frazer Imrie or Graham Tow at our London office.  Our contact details are available here.

Ton van Oeffel joins CWA

Ton van Oeffel, the well-known and very experienced Dutch petroleum chemist/surveyor has joined CWA. Ton has been appointed a Director of CWA Netherlands and will develop our survey and consultancy services regionally, with the benefit of direct access to his petroleum laboratory (Petrolab) facilities just outside Rotterdam.

CMS/CWA

Over the past 9 months, CWA has formed an alliance with China Marine Services, the well-founded survey consultancy within the People Republic, set up by the China Classification Society & Thomas Miller.

The CMS/CWA link-up will benefit a wide range of clients who are exposed to cargo risks within this notoriously difficult market. Direct access through CMS for accurate survey and fact finding will now be backed by CWA's deep expertise in prevention of cargo claims and incident response. CWA's input will take various forms: intensive in-situ training programmes, prompt advice from a dedicated technical bureau on a 7/24 hr basis, expert guidance to the attending surveyors or, when necessary, direct intervention of a CWA expert as co-ordinated by the attending CMS surveyor. CWA will also be available to add technical expertise to the surveyors' reports for litigation.

Expansion of CWA Food Team

Earlier this year saw the announcement about the formation of CWA International. This expansion of our business, together with an extremely busy year, has called for an enlargement of our Food team. Just to remind you about the existing team, Floris Menting has now taken charge of our newly formed company, CWA Netherlands in addition to his very busy schedule of marine and dry cargo damage investigations. I am pleased to say that we retain our close association with Godfrey Curtis. For my own part I am fully engaged on post mortem claims analysis, expert witness work and managing this part of our business.

We now have 5 new experts to cover broader aspects of our Food consultancy.

Paul Bidder (Food Processing)

Leslie Coveney (Food Chemist)

Slim Dinsdale (Microbiologist)

Peter Ferner (Meat Specialist)

Graham Tow (Food Technologist)

Thumbnail profiles are attached and full CV and further details can be found on the Food page of our web-site (which can be found by clicking here)

We also have direct access to centres of expertise on reefer engineering and entomology in matters arising from the carriage of refrigerated and chilled cargoes and cargo infestation respectively.

These additions make our Food Technology team significantly stronger and we hope the opportunity arises for us to be of service to you in the near future.

Formation of CWA International

From 1 July 2000 all our services will be through a single company – to be called CWA International Ltd. This new company, operating world-wide, is a response to the changing demands of the markets we serve. It brings under a single integrated board all of the services previously offered by CWA Consultants Ltd, CWA Engineering Safety and Research Ltd, REDD Services and regional offices overseas. In effect we have decided to simplify the running of our business by merging the various elements into a single entity, under one combined management.

Within the new Company our business will continue to be focussed on international trade and shipping, organized into small expert groups, with the focus on:

A new expanded board will be responsible for the overall conduct of the business with each of these areas the personal responsibility of individual directors. Each will command a network of dedicated specialist consultants. Enclosed with this letter you will find a ready reference for our key people and details of how to communicate with them at any time. Please let us know if you would like any further copies of the handout for your colleagues or if you need any other information at this stage on our range of services.
