External Consultant.  Works closely with CWA’s Oil & Chemical Department concerning tanker operations, oil claims and loss prevention.

Summary of Previous Professional Activities

1997-present Self Employed Marine Consultant & Surveyor

Conducting general shipboard surveying, including draught, off-hire and bunker surveys, dry cargo condition and damage surveys, vessel damage and steel shipment surveys.  Conducting warranty surveys for project cargo shipments.  Superintending the loading and securing of heavy lifts and project cargoes.  Superintending the loading and discharging of steel product and general cargoes in Europe and North America.  Superintending the discharge of multi grade, high value, bulk cargoes.  Investigation of oil cargo contamination, dry cargo damage assessment, vessel damage and pre-entry surveys for P&I interests. Risk assessment work, stranding and contact investigation, under sub-contract to other Consultants.  Carrying out the implementation and auditing of Quality and Safety Management Systems to the requirements of ISO 9000 and the ISM Code.

1977-1997 Mobil Shipping Co Ltd, London -  From Second Mate upwards

Including eight years as Master, engaged in world wide trading on product and crude oil tankers ranging from 33,000 to 280,000 tonnes DDWT, using a wide range of berths.  Carrying our his own berthing operations at the Beryl Oilfield as Master of a North Sea Shuttle Tanker for 2 years. Extensive experience of the dry docking and repair of oil tankers, including major seagoing maintenance and repair programmes.  Operating vessels to SIO9002/ISM standards since 1993.
 
In addition, during his time as Master, was involved in the investigation (by Owners, Consultants and MAIB) of a major accommodation fire on one of the vessels which was successfully dealt with at sea.

During the time with Mobil Shipping undertook two temporary shore based assignments:


1993/94 - Nautical Adviser

Carrying out the duties of a Marine Superintendent with particular reference to Shuttle Tanker Operations in the Beryl Oilfield and assisting with the operation of the International Fleet.  Liaising with Mobil North Sea regarding the marine operation of the Beryl Oilfield, including Offshore Installation Manager training.  Applying Flag State, International and Company Regulations to the Mobil tanker fleet.  Making recommendations for fleet operating practices.  Evaluating Company 3equipment and researching new products for the marine industry.  Liaising with contractors regarding the provision of services to Mobil Shipping and organising sea going maintenance teams.  Investigating accidents – personal, mechanical, vessel and jetty damage etc.  Evaluation of Third Party vessels.  Assessment of personnel during Bridge Simulator exercises.

1989 - Discharge Master

Expediting crude oil cargo discharges on Mobil operated and Third Party Chartered vessels.  Investigation into cargo contamination incidents and cargo quantity disputes.
1971-1976 Sir Wm. Reardon Smith & Sons Ltd. (Now ceased trading)

From Cadet to Third Mate, engaged in world wide trading on general cargo and bulk vessels carrying general cargo, packaged timber, forest products, steel products, heavy lifts up to 100 tonnes, and bulk cargoes including grain, iron ore and phosphate.  Experience was also gained in the dry docking, repair and conversion of cargo vessels.
