External marine engineering consultancy specialising in the surveying and assessment of vessels for sale and purchase - condition surveys, general superintendence work.  Drawing up, costing and supervising dry dockings, major repairs and modifications.  Management Consultancy and auditing.

Formally accredited vetting inspector for the following oil majors: Exxon, Statoil, Phillips Petroleum, Norsk Hydro and Tamoil Shipping.

1991- date Backler Marine, Marine Engineering Consultancy & Independent Marine Audit Ltd

Formed in 1993 to specialise in management consultancy in the shipping industry to help prepare companies for ISM certification. Major clients include Novoship (UK) Ltd, BT Shipping and Saga Shipping.
1984 - 1991 Ugland Brother Ltd - International Ship Managers, Technical Manager Promoted in 1989 from Superintendent Engineer Responsible for all aspects of the safe and efficient operation of a fleet of 12 vessels for an overseas client. This included drawing up budgets for approval by owners and ensuring they were maintained. Total annual expenditure in the region of US $ 14.5 million. Other duties included liaising directly with clients and deputising for the fleet manager in his absence. Within the fleet team were two Superintendent Engineers three Assistant Superintendents and two Purchasing Assistants.
1976 - 1984 Blue Star Ship Management Ltd, Managers of a fleet of 25 refrigerated cargo and cellular vessels Chief Engineer – appointed June 1979
Second Engineer Officer – appointed November 1976
Holder of a Lloyds Certificate to survey ships machinery
