Current Position at CWA

Daan Matheussen joined CWA in 1992 as a staff engineer and became a Director of the Company in 1996. He is responsible for the firm's various lines of business involving quantitative analysis and computer based modelling, particularly in the field of risk management analysis both technical and financial. Daan also plays a prominent role in the major projects by expert teams of consultants put together by CWA to meet specific client requirements. These include technical investigation of incidents, environmental impact studies, preparation of proofs of evidence for litigation.

Daan's experience at CWA includes

  • Team leader responsible for the development and implementation of a computerised rating model for leading underwriters of high capital, high hazard oil and gas plant.
  • Mathematical modelling of leakage rates and dispersion, for use in hazard analysis and the investigation of incidents
  • Dispersion modelling for detailed atmospheric pollution studies around major industrial plant and urban conurbations.
  • Data analysis of plant performance
  • Scientific and market research
  • Analysis of claims paid out by major oil insurers, identification of risk factors in the underwriting of oil refineries and petrochemical plants
  • Detailed investigation into the causation of power station acid smuts emissions incidents.
  • The development of a method for the rapid assessment of worst case incidents in refineries and petrochemical plant and the subsequent development of a software package (EML 5.0) tailored to the specific needs of the leading reinsurers of petroleum and petrochemical plant.
  • Analysis of business interruption as a consequence of the late delivery of a parcel of oil; loss of cargo through tanker leakage.
  • Daan is also responsible for the (extensive) computer based facilities at CWA and the development of database controls for in-house project and financial management.
  • Financial and insurance related risk analysis, working closely with Dr Stephen Satchell of Trinity College, Cambridge: emerging markets, Asian options, UK mortgage analysis.

Summary of Previous Employment

From 1989 to 1992, Daan worked in Johannesburg as a Researcher, Trainer and Programmer in various community based computer literacy projects. In this function, he was writing customised computer software tailored to specific organisational needs, conducting the subsequent training of users, as well as designing programmes to facilitate statistical sampling as needed for survey research, co-ordinating nation-wide the logistics of actual interviews.

Daan worked for Hoechst South Africa as a summer vacation student and completed the following projects:
